Book club guide

Discussion questions for groups reading The First Twelve Days. At 138 pages it fits comfortably into one meeting.

  1. The book covers only twelve days. Why do you think Scotty chose such a short window to tell a story this large?
  2. Illness, amputation and the end of a marriage all arrive at once. Which loss seemed to weigh on him most, and did that change as the days went on?
  3. How does the book separate surviving from living? Where did you see him start to choose the second?
  4. The subtitle names breath, bone and heart. What does each of those stand for in the story?
  5. Scotty describes moments of grace that arrived without being asked for. Have you had one of those in a hard season?
  6. What does the book suggest about how men are taught to handle pain and vulnerability?
  7. Which scene or line stayed with you after you closed the book, and why?
  8. The book ends on the idea that you are not finished. What would rebuilding look like for someone you know who is struggling right now?
  9. If you could ask Scotty one question about the days after the twelfth, what would it be?
